Mondays are always busy for me, but my flooring tip for today is about floating floors.
I will go into more depth later on different flooring installation methods and their benefits and why each one exists, however for this brief tip I wanted to talk about floating floors.
The upside of floating floors is that you can install it over a number of different subfloor types including wood, concrete, gypecrete, radiant heat traditional or heat pads, vinyl, tile and more.
In general as long as the floor is relatively flat (not the same as level) then you can put a floating floor over it.
DO NOT install a floating floor over carpet – EVEN low profile commercial carpets that are glued down.
Many types of flooring are now available as floating floors including hardwood, laminate, linoleum, cork, bamboo, ceramic tile and even stone. I must say on the last category the jury is still out on that application due to possible breakage issues.
The point is that it can be a great installation option.
One caveat: With a floating floor underlayments are critical. Choosing the proper underlayment is very important for sound and other considerations.

Hello. I’ve just learned that the Traffic Master Uni-clik Brazilian Cherry we purchased (still unopened)for a bedroom installation is a Home Depot exclusive product. Do you have any experience with this product? It has a 25 year warranty and 1/8″ “top” layer. Thank you very much for any info you have. Best regards, Gail
